New York's 3rd Congressional District special election held on February 13

Tom Suozzi (D) defeated Mazi Pilip (R) in a special election in New York's 3rd Congressional District on Feb. 13, 2024. The election was called following the expulsion of George Santos (R).

Suozzi represented an earlier version of the district from 2017 to 2023 and was a candidate for governor in the 2022 Democratic primary, while Pilip had served in the Nassau County Legislature since 2021.

As of Feb. 16, 2024, nine special elections have been called for the 118th Congress. From the 113th Congress to the 117th Congress, 67 special elections were held.

Ballotpedia to cover nearly half the country’s school board elections in 2024

This year, approximately 21,509 school board seats in 40 states are up for election—and Ballotpedia will cover nearly 10,000 of them.

In 2023, Ballotpedia covered 8,750 seats in 28 states.

Regular general school board elections in 2024 will take place on at least 12 different dates. Some states will have school board elections on multiple dates. In some states, school board election dates can vary by district. School districts in at least 14 states could also hold primary elections.

Fifteen candidates are running in the top-two primary in California's 30th Congressional District

Fifteen candidates are running in the top-two primary for California's 30th Congressional District on March 5. Four candidates lead in noteworthy endorsements, fundraising, and local media attention: Mike Feuer (D), Laura Friedman (D), Nick Melvoin (D), and Anthony Portantino, Jr. (D).

In a top-two primary, all candidates are listed on the same ballot. California adopted a top-two primary system in 2010 after the passage of Proposition 14. California, Nebraska, and Washington use top-two primaries for some elections (Alaska and Louisiana use variations on top-two primaries).

Also running in the primary are Francesco Arreaga (D), Joshua Bocanegra (No party preference), Stephen Dunwoody (D), Sal Genovese (D), J. Emilio Martinez (R), Courtney Najera (D), Ben Savage (D), and Sepi Shyne (D).
