Today is National Caregivers Day, Community.

These dedicated healthcare professionals serve those who need long-term care — all while being underpaid and underappreciated.

That’s why we are showing our appreciation for all their hard work.

The average age of long-term care recipients is 69.4 years, indicating that a large portion of those who receive the services provided by caregivers are senior citizens.

Studies show that by 2030, more than one million San Diego County residents will be 55 years or older.

And while the number of people who need caregiver support increases, the number of caregivers is not increasing at the same rate.

This means current caregivers — who are already overburdened and underpaid — will have to take on more responsibilities over time.

It is vital that we continue to invest in quality solutions to these staffing issues and improvements to the infrastructure within our County’s Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) so that both caregivers and those they serve are taken care of.

While we are committed to improving and expanding resources to help those in our Community, we must appreciate those already doing the work.
