The members of the House of Representatives have gone home, and they won’t return until February 28th―just before parts of the government start to shut down without a funding bill.

Speaker Mike Johnson―who used his first floor speech to call for the “immediate” creation of a closed-door commission to cut Social Security and Medicare―set up government funding so that the departments of Agriculture, Energy, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development will shut down first, with the rest of the government following one week later.

So, with this looming threat, why did the House go home instead of negotiating? Because Johnson’s hardball strategy is to force the Senate to accept his demand to attach his closed-door commission to any government funding bill:

After Tuesday’s election, when Democrats flipped the seat Republican George Santos had held, Speaker Johnson will need Democratic votes to pass any government funding bill. We need to make sure every Democrat hears, over and over again, that a vote for a ‘fiscal commission’ is a vote to cut Social Security and Medicare.
