In my work in pediatric palliative care and hospice, I saw the difference that Make-A-Wish(R) made in the lives of countless children.
I won’t sugarcoat it: Few places are more devastating than children’s hospice. It is a difficult place for both children and their families as they transition to focusing on a child’s comfort. Pediatric hospice is a place where far too often a child has lost all sense of childhood.
But Make-A-Wish helps change that.
What I want people to understand about wishes is that for a child and family facing a critical illness, a wish is not just something nice. It’s something necessary. I have seen firsthand how a wish can be so powerful, not just for the wish kid and their family but also to the providers, the nurses, the community and so many more. A wish gives a child the chance to be a kid again.
A wish is a chance to be part of hope, it’s a chance to be a part of a kid’s story, it’s a chance to make a difference.
That’s why, after years of watching these small miracles happen over and over again, after years of watching my patients once again shine with hope, I made the decision to join the Make-A-Wish team as Director of Medical Affairs. To work on both sides of this remarkable mission is such an honor.
The ability to grant a wish for children facing critical illnesses and creating life-long impact is hard to even describe. But of course, their wishes aren’t possible without the support of people like you. Because, for every child whose wish comes true, there are two more kids waiting on theirs. So today I have to ask you, as someone who has seen firsthand how transformative wishes are:
