Though the grounds have shifted, the fight for socialism and justice lives on

Howdy Comrade,
These are unique and trying times we live in. Our normal avenues of political engagement are unavailable to us, forcing us to get creative in order to continue fighting for a just world for all people. To that end, the steering committee has been working hard to respond properly to this situation. We have several key events and actions coming up soon that we want y'all to participate in.

7pm, Zoom Call; RSVP for Link

As we maintain social distancing and stay-at-home orders, virtual meetings will become our primary method of gathering together. This meeting, on Wednesday April 1 at 7 PM will be an organized space to talk about our current situation, the plans of action we have already developed, and organizing opportunities to come. The forces of reaction and capital certainly haven't stopped organizing against us, so we can't stop either! You will need to RSVP to receive the link to our Zoom calls, so make sure to do that. The Steering Committee is available and ready to help out in any way we can to make sure this is accessible to all, so make sure to reach out to us with any questions or help you need.

Steering Committee Elections
|
Per our Bylaws, Houston DSA holds a Steering Committee election each April. Because we're prevented from meeting in person by the ongoing public health crisis, the Steering Committee has decided to conduct April’s elections online using OpaVote.
This is our first time conducting an election online, and we’re committed to doing it in a way that is transparent and accessible to all members. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please reply and let us know.
Nominations are open until Tuesday, April 7 at 11:59pm. This will give the Nominations Committee time to assemble candidate bios and prepare the ballots. Any Houston DSA member may submit nominations for the Steering Committee. Self-nominations are accepted.
|
Houston DSA will hold a virtual meeting via Zoom on Wednesday, April 8 where we will hold a candidate Q&A. Afterwards, online voting will begin April 8 at 11:59pm, and will remain open for 24 hours. Members will receive an email containing a link to the ballot. Every member has one vote for each position. Voting by proxy is not permitted. Ballots will be ranked choice and conducted by instant runoff voting (IRV).
The following Steering Committee positions will be up for election in April:
- Co-Chair A
- Communications Secretary
- Membership Secretary
- Recording Secretary
- Treasurer
These represent five of the seven Steering Committee positions; the remaining two, Co-Chair B and Internal Secretary, are elected in October. For a full description of each role, check out section 5.2 of our bylaws.
Again, please let us know of any concerns or ideas related to the transparency or accessibility of what will be our first online election.

Steering Committee Elections Open for 24 Hours

Thank you for staying in the fight with us. Now more than ever it's important to care of one another and fight in solidarity. This is only beginning, and so is our response. We have big plans for how to best organize around the pandemic in order to make the world a better place. The idea that what affects one of us in an injury to us all has never been more literal. Let's join together in solidarity in order to insure that those most affected are taken care of as much as the billionaires and politicians. Let's struggle together!
In solidarity,
Stephen Adkison, Houston DSA Communications Secretary
