Hello and welcome to my weekly update!

Parliament may have been on recess over the last week, but I've been busy getting out and about across the constituency, seeing some of the places and organisations that make our community great.

HIGHLIGHTS

It was a pleasure to be back amongst our LGA Labour Group family last week at their conference, outlining how a Labour government will work with councils, not against them, to build a social care system fit for the future.

I was pleased to also join a Terrence Higgins Trust panel on Labour’s commitment to the campaign to end new cases of HIV by 2030, lots done, lots to do.

Local government shows what Labour can achieve in power, making a real difference to the lives of our communities despite 14 years of Conservative chaos in Westminster.

A huge thank you to Elaine and the team at The Monastery Manchester for showing me around this absolute gem of a building in the heart of Gorton.

Once the Monastery of St Francis, this magical Pugin building, dubbed Manchester’s “Taj Mahal”, has been beautifully restored after nearly three decades of hard work and commitment by the Trust and volunteers. It’s now a fantastic community hub focusing on health and wellbeing as well as a great event venue and heritage centre.

It was lovely to get a tour of this magnificent building and to see some of the great projects that are happening here, like the listening service, which provides free counselling to people.

Thanks for introducing my constituency office staff to the brilliant work you do!
Thank you to the team at Ultra Clean Dentonhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554756383134&__cft__[0]=AZUiBNkog9ASGH9b1DSD_43pZRkfojIE8x1zq5pq64j7qtDmr9WA4RC1z-FxxYpaYV4EJt5fgfFUxUh8XCvfbLsK6QrteO1ZeeXfWdTIjsg9BFK2uax-uZkRGV3B_qG5C-MApl5q1v_tDI_B8g_q6ZiJZNBsRxrHPMbn3lxrdcg_pCgokDgd-GSuZs8oj5-nf6o&__tn__=-]K-Rfor asking me to officially open their brand new laundrette at 75 Manchester Road (at the corner of Ann Street).

Growing up just round the corner in Maple Avenue, this shop has been a laundrette for as long as I can remember and it is great to see it reopen. Having had a tour of the facilities, it’s been fully modernised and they’ve now got the very best modern, heavy-duty washing machines and driers.

They’re also planning to open an ironing and dry cleaning service in the near future.

Please give them your support, and good luck to them for their future success!
I’ve had a great morning at the Tameside Arts Ltd Create Connect Centre in Denton for their Volunteer Day.

They’re looking to recruit volunteers to help with their activities for supporting adults with learning and physical disabilities, running classes from ages 14 and up, please help them if you can.

Somehow I got roped into the Yoga class!. Thanks Lyle

It was fantastic to see the work being done by the team on the site of the new NHS Community Diagnostic Centre at Crown Point North Shopping Park.

This will be a vital facility covering Tameside, Glossop, and Stockport, bringing health services into the heart of the community.

The centre will include MRI and CT scanners, consulting rooms, and ultrasound facilities, ensuring the widest possible range of services are available on the doorstep.

I look forward to seeing the continued rapid development of the site, ahead of its scheduled opening in August.

This week is #HeartUnions week, and in our part of the world, we have plenty to be thankful to our trade unions for.

Greater Manchester has a proud tradition of trade unionism, from Peterloo, to the Chartists, to the founding of the Trade Union Congress, we have always been a powerhouse for working people standing up for their rights.

So much of what we take for granted in modern life, such as paid holiday, sick leave, the working week, have been secured thanks to hard fought battles by our trade union movement.

But in the 21st century, with the world of work rapidly evolving around us all the time, trade unions are more important than ever.

Workplaces and working practices don’t look the same now as they did five years ago, let alone 10 or 20 years ago, and it is vital that the trade union movement continues to evolve alongside.

We only need to look at some of the pioneering deals that have been done in the gig-economy by my own union, the GMB, with Uber and Deliveroo, to provide much needed rights and protections for workers.

Far from being stuck in the past, trade unions are so often at the forefront of pioneering change, ensuring hard fought victories are not left behind by the rapidly developing world workers find themselves in.

The kind of partnerships we have seen developed in recent years show what can be achieved through positive engagement on all sides.

Sadly, that isn’t a spirit we have seen much of from the Conservative Party over the last 14 years.

Rather than engage in constructive negotiation, they have spent their time sniping from the side-lines.

Whether the junior doctors strike, or rail strikes, the way to make progress is by getting round a table and negotiating, not trying to drag things into the gutter.

Working people who are standing up for their rights should not be used as pawns in the petty political game this government is playing.

It’s why I’m so proud of the Labour Party’s historic links with the trade union movement, which are as important now as they have ever been.

The next Labour government won’t relentlessly attack unions as the Tories have done, we will work constructively with them to change the lives of working people across this country for the better.
