Weekly Update - 16 February

This week, we found out that after 14 years of Tory economic decline, the UK entered into a recession. Rishi Sunak’s promise to grow the economy is now in tatters – he can’t deny that he has left Britain worse off and it’s working people who will pay the price. Many families will be deeply worried by this news. With Rachel Reeves as Chancellor, Labour will get Britain’s future back and make working people better off. Labour's plan for growth is about making working people better off. We will: Put economic stability first by introducing a new fiscal lock to bring economic security back to family finances Get Britain building again by ripping up the planning laws to kickstart the construction of new homes, transport, clean energy, new infrastructure Back British business by implementing a new industrial strategy in partnership with business to maximise Britain’s strengths in life sciences, digital and clean power, and creating a National Wealth Fund to unlock billions of pounds of private investment Make Work Pay by introducing a new deal for working people and delivering a real living wage Together, this will get Britain’s future back.

University Hospitals Birmingham

A new report conducted by Care Quality Commission (CQC) has stated that University Hospitals Birmingham Trust (UHB) needs improvement, highlighting some key areas of concern around patient safety within emergency departments across the trust’s hospitals. Patient safety is of paramount concern. People need to have confidence that when they need care, they will get the service they deserve. The trust’s top priority should be safe staffing ratios and risk management, so it is able to deliver on the recommendations from this report and those that came before it. This week, I met with Jonathon Brotherton, Chief Executive of the trust, to discuss next steps following this new report. I will continue to hold UHB to account until we see significant improvements for patients and staff. The staff at UHB do a fantastic job and it’s vital that they feel safe, supported and valued. I spoke to BBC Midlands.

Politics Midlands

Last Sunday, it was great to appear on BBC Politics Midlands alongside West Midlands Mayor Andy Street. We spoke about disgraced Tory Warwickshire County councillors, whether the West Midlands Mayor should take on policing powers from the Police and Crime Commissioner, and improving rail connectivity between the Midlands and the North after the Government’s chaotic scrapping of HS2. Edgbaston Tennis

It was lovely to join the LTA at the Edgbaston Priory over the weekend. What a pleasure to meet British tennis players Ali Collins and Lily Miyazaki, too. I’m looking forward to working on a schools and community programme related to tennis in the constituency.

By-elections

Labour victories in both Kingswood and Wellingborough clearly show that people want change and are ready to put their faith in a changed Labour Party to deliver it. By winning in these Tory strongholds, we can confidently say that Labour is back in the service of working people. In Wellingborough, we overturned an 18,000 majority, recording our second-highest vote swing - 28.5 points - from the Tories in a post-war by-election. In Kingswood, we won with another impressive 16.4-point swing. I look forward to welcoming both new MPs, Damien Egan and Gen Kitchen, to Parliament.

Local News

Telegraph Poles

Multiple constituents have written to me to complain about private broadband providers putting up poles on their streets in spite of their objections. This infrastructure can be built underground, and residents are seeing numerous poles appearing on a single road. I wrote to Ofcom to express my concerns.

MHRC Next week, the MHRC will be visiting Roundlea Road, B31 1DB, in Bartley Green on Monday 19th February, Fountain Road, B17 8NL, in North Edgbaston, on Tuesday 20th February, Jackson Way, B32 1BS, in Quinton, on Wednesday 21st February, and Hermitage Road, B15 3UP, in Edgbaston, on Thursday 22nd February. The centre will be open between 7am and 12:30pm, so please do come along if you’re local and have bulky household waste to dispose of. Campaigning
