Hi, Louis DeJoy has been an absolute disaster for the U.S. Postal Service. The Trump-appointed postmaster general has raised rates on five occasions, slowed delivery, and cut operations at more than 200 locations. And many of his worst ideas have been enacted with little to no public comment.1 Now, with two seats coming open on the Postal Service Board of Governors — the body that oversees the postmaster general — we finally have a chance to take a key step toward getting rid of Louis DeJoy once and for all.2 Demand Progress Action has already mobilized more than 100,000 people to contact Congress and the Biden administration to get rid of DeJoy. Now it's time to ramp up the pressure.
Louis DeJoy is a former logistics company CEO who earned his post by donating over $1 million to Republicans since 2016 — not by demonstrating a commitment to public service.3 But a public service is exactly what the post office is. Americans rely on it every day to receive Social Security checks, prescription drugs, and more, and it's especially crucial for rural and Indigenous communities.4 DeJoy's 10-year plan to privatize the Postal Service puts all of that at risk. It eliminates 50,000 jobs,5 hikes fees above the rate of inflation,6 and has already forced some neighborhoods to go weeks without mail delivery.7 To add insult to injury, the Board of Governors banned public comments at its open session meeting last year and announced it would only take public input one time in 2024.8 Enough is enough. It's well past time for the Postal Service Board of Governors to fire DeJoy and save the U.S. Postal Service. And with two openings on the panel right now, this is the time for us to turn up the pressure.
