John,
Remember a few years ago when the DCCC (House Democrats’ fundraising arm) blacklisted anyone working to support progressive candidates challenging moderate, anti-choice incumbents in the Democratic primaries?
When everyday working-class people were challenging corporate-backed incumbents, the DCCC made an entire blacklist to prevent our party from looking more like the people that elect them.
Now, as AIPAC threatens to spend $100 million against progressive Democratic incumbents with Republican megadonor support, the DCCC is silent.
AIPAC is building a war chest worth tens of millions of dollars largely funded by millionaires, billionaires, and right-wing extremists who also contribute to the likes of Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, and other GOP candidates.
The right-wing backed, anti-Palestinian lobby group has “publicly declared war on progressive congressmembers” and is planning to spend big money to unseat them in this year’s primary elections.
Just look at New York’s 16th district, where AIPAC is the single-largest donor to Jamaal Bowman’s moderate challenger, George Latimer. He received $600,000 from AIPAC after they hand-picked him to run against Jamaal. Latimer is also using anti-union consultant Global Strategy Group (GSG) for polling support.
As The American Prospect noted, “GSG taking on Latimer as a client shows that the Democratic Party’s top corporate consultants are willing to help unseat Democratic incumbents—a strategy that progressives were excoriated for just a few years ago by the very same people when the dynamic was reversed.
Apparently, it’s okay to challenge Democratic incumbents when they’re pro-peace progressives, just not when they’re corporate-backed establishment Democrats.
It goes to show that we can’t sit back and rely on the Democratic establishment to protect Squad incumbents like Jamaal, Cori, Ilhan, and Rashida. That’s where you come in.
If the Democratic Party truly cares about protecting incumbents who fight for our shared values and democracy, they would create an AIPAC blacklist and demand candidates stop taking their right-wing megadonor money.
We won’t hold our breath. Instead, we’re going to keep building the resources necessary to fight back and protect our young, diverse, working-class bloc of leaders committed to creating progressive change for the people.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
