Black History Month, Redevelopment Approved, Valentine's Day, & Share the Love! February 2024 E-Newsletter CELEBRATING CULTURE Black History Month at AHC We're celebrating Black culture, music, visual arts, and more across our communities and in our Arlington and Baltimore offices this month. During our February all-staff meeting, we heard from special guests who shared the significance of Black history in the work they do. LaTosha Maddox, the Baltimore-based muralist who recently completed a mural at our Barclay Greenmount community, shared her goal to beautify and bring positivity to the Baltimore community with her art. Jaida Rogers, singer and senior at The George Washington University, sang “Greatest Love of All." AHC Board Member CC Jenkins spoke about Black culture and community in the Green Valley neighborhood in Arlington. Turning the Page AHC is celebrating Black History Month by reading African American and Black diaspora authors. Emily Ward, Data Analytics Manager, brought books from home to set up a lending library at her work station for the whole team to enjoy. What Does Black History Mean to AHC Staff? REAL ESTATE RECAP AHC Approved for Phase II of Terraces Redevelopment Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) received zoning approval from Arlington County for the second phase of our redevelopment at The Terraces at Arlington View community. The plan will replace 37 apartments on the west side of South Rolfe Street with 78 new apartments. The project will more than double the homes and further our revitalization work in this community. This comes less than a year after AHC's grand opening of The Terraces at Arlington View (East), a $40.8 million redevelopment that includes 77 affordable apartments. Read More   AHC Featured in VHA Annual Report The Spire, an AHC community in Alexandria, is featured in the Virginia Housing Alliance's (VHA) first annual report on the Virginia Housing Trust Fund (VHTF), a state initiative created to encourage equitable and affordable housing development. The Spire received a $620,000 VHTF award in the 2018-2019 funding cycle for the redevelopment of the community in partnership with the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. Read more in the report. Making Progress We’ve come so far! Randolph Road, our upcoming Montgomery County community, broke ground last January. Check out this time-lapse video from our construction camera to see what difference a year makes. Randolph Road will add 195 deeply affordable homes and onsite Resident Services and childcare. The community co-locates rental and homeownership housing options. We’re working hard with Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, Harkins Builders, and Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS to bring this community to its first residents in 2025. NEWS NUGGETS Happy Valentine's Day from AHC! We're keeping residents at the heart by sharing cards, candy, and connections. Check out this sweet video to see our young residents delivering valentines to seniors at one of our communities. Watch Video   The Greenmount West Community Center (GWCC) in Baltimore held a “Love is All We Need” Valentine’s Day party. AHC residents enjoyed food, music, card-making, and gift bags. “Thank you to AHC and the community residents for making this a truly happy Valentine’s Day at Greenmount West Community Center,” Yoka Browning, GWCC Community Outreach Coordinator, said. “Your energy, your smiles, your stories – it’s all love.” Take an inside look at the festivities on GWCC’s Instagram. Coats for a Cause AHC Board Member and resident Mildred Mack manages a free boutique at Charter House, a senior community in Maryland. Residents donate lightly used items that Mildred launders, irons, and prepares for the boutique. Resident Services staff identified a need at Barclay Greenmount, a Baltimore community, so the boutique donated extra coats to Barclay residents. All items in the boutique are free and include clothing, household goods, furniture, and handicap-accessible items like wheelchairs, crutches, and shower chairs. Bridging the Gap Thanks to our partnership with the Alliance for Arlington Senior Programs, we’re offering a basic computer skills class for seniors at The Terraces at Arlington View. We’re glad to support digital equity across our communities! West Point Workshop AHC Board Member Terron Sims II led a workshop about his experience at West Point Academy with students in our College & Career Readiness (CCR) program. A friend from the academy joined him, along with Pat Locke, the first African American woman to attend West Point. They shared their experiences, answered questions, and discussed what it takes to be a West Point student. The workshop exposed students to a military academic career option. CCR helps high school juniors and seniors successfully transition to their next step. GET INVOLVED 3 Ways to Keep the Love Flowing Valentine’s Day may be over, but the love doesn’t have to end!
