NCRC Statement On Bank Lobbyist Lawsuit To Block Community Reinvestment Act Rules
By NCRC
"The banking industry is showing its true colors. Out of one side of their mouth they say higher capital requirements will hurt people of color and low-income people, but then out of the other they attack the nation’s preeminent law requiring them to lend to those same people. Nobody should believe them when they say they care about lending to working-class people and people of color. On top of this, they’re fighting to dismantle the CFPB, and they’ve even asked the courts to let them out of such mild irritations as ‘tell us who you do and don’t lend money to for small business activity.’" [Read More]

The Banking Lobby's Cynical And Hollow Challenge To The Community Reinvestment Act Rule
By Brad Blower, NCRC
In an all too familiar scenario, some of the largest players in the banking industry are using the federal courts as a means to delay or completely kill a federal rule intended to benefit consumers and ensure safe, sound and non-discriminatory lending. On February 5, 2024, a group of the largest bank lobbying trade associations filed a complaint in Texas district federal court challenging a newly issued regulatory rule intended to update the standards for examining banks’ compliance with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The trade associations, which include the American Bankers Association (ABA), the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA), the Chamber of Commerce of the United States (Chamber) and three Texas-based banking lobbying groups argue in their complaint that three agencies charged by Congress to oversee the CRA violated the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) by exceeding the authority that Congress had provided and acted “arbitrarily and capriciously” in issuing the rule. The complaint seeks to stop the CRA rule from ever being implemented. [Read More]

Fear of discrimination and dying during pregnancy and childbirth may lead pregnant Black women to prefer seeing a Black obstetrician, a small study suggests. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill conducted a series of interviews and focus groups with 32 Black women ages 27 to 34 about their past experiences with obstetric care, along with their perspectives about having a Black obstetrician. The study’s findings were presented Wednesday at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s annual meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.[Read More]

By Molly Farrar, Boston.com
The town-wide vote will determine if Milton’s zoning bylaws will change to be compliant with the state’s MBTA Communities Act, a 2021 law that requires communities near transit lines to change zoning to allow for more multifamily units. In December, Milton approved the zoning bylaws change during a Special Town Meeting, but a petition with about 3,000 signatures gives voters another chance to make their voices heard on the changes.
