Our Practitioner Performance Advice service has published its latest Insights paper, reviewing the specialties that feature in the cases we advise on and key themes that exist within each of these. We found that surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry and emergency medicine have the highest proportion of cases per 1,000 doctors in the workforce for each specialty, with psychiatry being the specialty with the highest rate of cases, while emergency medicine has seen an increase in cases requesting advice from us since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Learning from remote consultations in general practice [[link removed]]

NHS Resolution recently assisted research teams from the Universities of Oxford and Plymouth and the Nuffield Trust in identifying learnings from primary care remote consultations undertaken in general practice. [[link removed]] Case of note: Paul v. Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust; Polmear v. Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust; Purchase v. Dr. Ahmed (SC: 11 January 2024) [[link removed]]

In this recent landmark case, the Supreme Court considered claims from secondary victims of alleged clinical negligence. In its ruling, the court changed significantly the law on recoverability of damages in such cases. Read more [[link removed]].

Sharing learning at regional maternity event [[link removed]]

On 25 January 2024, we hosted a collaborative regional event for representatives from trusts and local maternity and neonatal systems across London and the South-East. It was an opportunity to share learnings from our regional claims data and for guest speakers to share their own initiatives for improving maternity safety. Virtual forum on fundamental dishonesty [[link removed]]

On 31 January 2024, NHS Resolution held a virtual forum on the law and practice surrounding fundamental dishonesty. The event was open to our members’ legal teams in both NHS trusts and the independent sector, and featured guest speakers from Capsticks and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust. Two recent training workshops run by our Primary Care Appeals service for NHS England regional dental commissioning teams and integrated care boards, and attended by observers from the British Dental Association, have been praised by attendees, who highlighted their informative and useful nature. Dr Denise Chaffer honoured with CBE [[link removed]]

We are delighted that Dr Denise Chaffer, recently retired Director of Safety and Learning for NHS Resolution, has been awarded a CBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours.
