Hi there,

It’s been a week since I checked in last -- and in those few days, the changes in our daily lives have become more and more profound. I hope that you are keeping safe and adjusting as well as possible, Team Pete.

Chasten and I are in South Bend with Buddy and Truman. Except to get food and exercise, we’re staying in the house and practicing social distancing.

For many of us, as action-oriented people, it’s difficult to accept the truth that the most important thing we can do is largely to stay put. Our strange new reality is that as members of a society, one of our most important obligations is to stay home.

But I know that the community of our supporters is not one to sit idly by when people need help. You are action takers. Advocates. Sign makers. Community leaders. Event builders.

With leaders in the White House failing to lead, and with our day-to-day social networks in upheaval, it can be hard to know the best way to help. I’ve been inspired by individuals and organizations who have focused their efforts on making sure our vulnerable communities stay safe and healthy, and wanted to share a few of them with you.

Here are just a few that I think are doing terrific and important work. If you are looking for ways to help, a donation to one of these organizations will go a long way. Some of them may have additional ways for you to help. I’ve linked to their websites so you can check local opportunities.

Domestic Workers [[link removed]] is providing $400 in emergency assistance for qualifying home care workers, nannies, and house cleaners who are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This allows these workers to stay home and stay safe.

Feeding America [[link removed]] is supporting local food banks to ensure nobody goes hungry during the pandemic.

Meals on Wheels [[link removed]] delivers meals to vulnerable senior citizens. Their COVID-19 Response Fund will get emergency resources to local programs.

No Hungry Kid [[link removed]] is working to ensure that no child who normally receives a meal from a school lunch program goes hungry during the pandemic.

Global Giving [[link removed]] is helping stop the spread of the virus spread by giving communities on the front lines of the crisis the resources they need to act quickly and protect the most vulnerable. The organization sends doctors, nurses, and health care workers to communities in need and is also helping to get masks, ventilators, and other lifesaving medical supplies to hospitals and clinics.

One Fair Wage [[link removed]] is providing cash assistance to restaurant workers, car service drivers, delivery workers, and personal service workers who often rely on tips and whose income is threatened by COVID-19.

AmeriCares [[link removed]] is funding the distribution of critical supplies, education, training, and other support for its staff and partners here at home and around the world.

UNITE HERE [[link removed]] is providing economic relief for working families facing layoffs and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are nurses, hospital janitorial staff, doctors, and other health care workers in our community. Thank you.

There are teachers who are figuring out ways to connect virtually with their students and make sure they have the resources they need to stay safe, healthy, fed, and learning. Thank you.

There are Americans filing for unemployment, and still looking for ways to support their community. Thank you. We will get through this.

There are working parents figuring out how to juggle child care and education with their own 9-5 jobs. Thank you.

There are millennials in our community who are begging their boomer parents to stay home. And there are boomer parents who are welcoming their children back home and helping them to safely isolate. Thank you.

The themes that drove our campaign -- in particular the importance of belonging and the desire for an America where we have each other’s backs -- will be more important than ever in the days ahead. For all you do to live these values, thank you.

Stay safe, stay home, and stay hopeful. Thanks and more soon,

Pete
