The Silent Parade (1917) and Founding Principles

Dear John,

The Founding principles of liberty, equality, and justice were denied to Black Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century. In July 1917, approximately 10,000 African Americans marched down Fifth Avenue in New York City to protest violence, disenfranchisement, and the denial of equal rights.

Images captured from that day are a striking look into the history of our country and the work it takes to ensure the Founding principles are realized for all.
