Dear John,

I believe that safe and dignified housing is a human right. Housing is at the center of every challenge we face: workforce retention, substance use disorder, a declining population, and public safety concerns — and we need to address it.

On Monday, I proudly introduced the Community Housing Act (CHA), which offers creative policy solutions and big, bold investments to alleviate the national housing crisis.

The CHA would tackle some of the biggest hurdles to addressing our housing crisis here in Vermont and across the country. It would increase the supply of affordable housing, ensure that affordable housing remains affordable, give renters the support they need to maintain their housing, revamp zoning codes, and so much more. This plan invests over $500 billion in federal programs to support the construction of affordable housing.

As a parent of two kids and a long-time resident of Vermont, I know firsthand the struggle of finding affordable housing. The CHA is a huge step in the right direction.
