John -- Time is of the essence, and we want to ensure you didn't miss this email. -- Robert Reich
Dear John,
When George W. Bush won the White House in 2000 despite losing the nationwide popular vote, we were told it was a once-in-a-lifetime fluke.
Then, just 16 years later, it happened again, when Donald Trump won the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote by a whopping 2.9 million votes.
Enough is enough. Our democracy might not survive another Electoral College meltdown — and if the 2024 election is as close as expected, it could easily happen again.
The good news is that there’s a simple, completely legal way that we could end the Electoral College madness right now: the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Under the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, states agree to award their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. Once enough states join to add up to 270 electoral votes, the compact goes into effect and the Electoral College becomes moot — and all we need are 5 or 6 more states to reach the magic number of 270 this year.
Will you make a donation to help get the truth out and end the undemocratic Electoral College system before the 2024 presidential election?
Close your eyes and imagine if there was no Electoral College and we elected the president by national popular vote.
George W. Bush wouldn’t have been able to launch the Iraq War.
The assault weapons ban, which expired under George W. Bush, would likely still be in place, preventing countless mass shootings.
Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett wouldn’t be sitting on the Supreme Court right now, and as a result, Roe v. Wade would still be the law of the land and Citizens United almost surely would have been thrown out.
The massive Bush and Trump tax breaks — which together have cost more than $10 trillion and counting — never would have been passed, leaving us with enough revenue to to end hunger and homelessness, provide free public college to every working family, accelerate the transition to clean energy, provide universal health insurance, and more, all while running a surplus.
And there never would have been a January 6 insurrection or a Donald Trump takeover of the Republican Party.
We must put an end to the Electoral College madness, and if just 5 or 6 more states representing at least 65 electoral votes join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact during this spring’s state legislative sessions, we will finally get it done. Will you make a donation to help support our efforts to educate the public and end the Electoral College system?
Yes, I’ll make a donation.
Thank you for helping us defend our democracy,
Robert Reich
