John— Yesterday, in the midst of celebration, yet another tragedy unfolded: this time in Kansas City, Missouri. The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl on Sunday, and a million people joined the parade in their honor. Players, coaches, staff, fans, and government officials all gathered to partake in the festivities. It was a day full of joy, until it wasn’t. [ [link removed] ]Can you donate to GIFFORDS Law Center today? In the wake of the shooting in Kansas City, we’re redoubling our efforts to fight the gun lobby. While we don’t have all the details yet, we do know that one person was killed and at least 20 people were injured. Children are still being treated for injuries at local hospitals. Players reportedly left their buses to help calm traumatized kids. It’s a scene we’ve watched play out over and over again in America. And it’s no surprise that this time, the tragedy occurred in a state with some of the worst gun laws in the country. [ [link removed] ]Missouri received an F on our Annual Gun Law Scorecard—it’s tied for for the second-weakest gun laws in the nation and has the sixth-highest gun death rate. Yesterday wasn’t just the day that a Super Bowl parade for the Chiefs turned deadly. It was also the sixth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. The one constant among all the many shootings in this country isn’t hard to identify: reckless access to guns puts our communities at risk.
