John,
I was devastated to learn about the mass shooting at yesterday’s Super Bowl parade in Kansas City. What should have been a joyous day for the city was ruined when a gunman opened fire, killing one person and injuring 22 others. As always, the victims and their families I pray for.
One thing is crystal clear: these devastating tragedies will continue to occur until politicians pass gun safety legislation at all levels of government. Over and over again, our nation is rocked by mass shootings, and over and over again, all that Republican elected officials can offer is “thoughts and prayers”.
It’s cruel that this latest mass shooting in Kansas City happened on the six-year anniversary of the Parkland massacre that killed 17 people in Florida. Whether it’s children going to school or sports fans celebrating a Super Bowl victory, everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities without the fear of being shot.
My son Jordan was killed by gun violence in 2012, and not a day goes by when I don’t feel the pain of losing him. This is an experience that’s far too common in our country. Every year, thousands of Americans lose loved ones from gun violence. When will we say enough is enough?
We MUST stand up to Republicans and the NRA and continue to demand concrete action to stop gun violence. Until we strengthen our laws around guns, we’ll continue to witness horrific events unfolding like we did yesterday.
Stand and demand better,
Lucy
