Why we are 350: Scientists overwhelmingly agree that 350ppm CO2 is the upper limit to sustain life as humans have lived it. For more than 800,000 years atmospheric CO2 varied between roughly 180 to 280ppm ([link removed]) .

Earth passed 350ppm CO2 during 1988!

Tell Biden: Fund climate solutions, not wars

The national 350.org office recently sent out the following message on the links between militarism, war and the climate crisis. Members of our local 350 affiliate have addressed this issue for several years. George Martin and Julie Enslow have given many presentations and workshops on militarism and the climate crisis at national and international conferences and World Social Forums. More recently, Veterans for Peace have also taken on this important issue. It is good to see national 350 speak out strongly on this.

Please read the following and take the action provided.

Militarism and war are major contributors to the climate crisis.
From violent brutality that destroys lives to the contamination of water and soil, war takes a devastating toll on people and the land. And as war rages in multiple parts of the world, we don’t have to look far to see the consequences.

Recent reports show that Israel’s bombardment of Gaza killed thousands of people and produced more carbon emissions than 20 climate-vulnerable countries do in a year—in the first two months alone.^1

While the direct climate impact of war is alarming on its own, it is far from the only reason we should care. We are in this fight for people and the planet and for a more just and harmonious way of living. The same extractive and imperialist system has led both to the climate crisis and to the US funding genocide and global conflict.
And with climate chaos wreaking havoc, world leaders—including President Biden—continue to spend billions to fund wars and militaries and next to nothing on the climate investments we desperately need to save our future.^2,3

Wars and militarism are destructive in countless ways, including climate breakdown. That’s why we’re urging President Biden to divest from wars and fund climate solutions—will you join us? ([link removed])

Last year, President Biden made a bold commitment to increase renewable energy targets, and he recently paused all new liquified natural gas (LNG) exports—but these steps are not nearly enough to solve the climate crisis.

The United States is one of the top emitters in the world, and our military uses more fossil fuel than any other institution on Earth.^4

To truly transition our energy system away from fossil fuels, we need to invest significantly more in a liveable future for all, not military funding that puts human lives and our environment at risk.

Will you send a message to President Biden and urge him to stop funding wars and invest in our future? ([link removed])

How much do we love the IRA?

Just a quick reminder that our first webinar on what's in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) aka "the largest climate bill ever!” is coming up in one week.

Join us Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 7 PM Eastern/ 4 PM Pacific ([link removed]) - and forward this message to your networks of IRA-curious friends to spread the word 😘.

The Inflation Reduction Act is touted as “the biggest investment in climate since ever.” But too many voters don’t know what’s in the IRA. They don’t know how it benefits them and their communities. Elected officials aren’t much help either; they just say “we passed the largest climate bill since ever!” and move on.

When we surveyed climate hawks on the IRA a few weeks ago, less than a third of you said you were “very confident” or “mostly confident” in your knowledge of the law. And hundreds of you asked to learn more about electric school buses, how you and your neighbors can get tax breaks for electric cars or solar panels, and more.

We’re going to break down the IRA so that you know exactly how it works, and can share with friends, family, and voters. Sign up for our webinar Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 7 PM Eastern/ 4 PM Pacific. ([link removed])

This is just the first webinar in a series. The IRA is a big, complicated law with a lot of pieces. In the next few months, we’re going to bring in experts from across the climate movement to explain all the different parts.

We’ve found that even people who put a lot of time and effort into getting the bill passed still don’t know what’s in it, thanks to the secretive negotiations. Climate hawks like you campaigned for a full solid year to get the IRA passed. If you’re one of the many who signed petitions, sent letters, made phone calls, or just plain raged against the Manchin – thank you! And if you’re one of the many who still don’t have a good sense of what’s in the bill
 you’re not alone.

The Inflation Reduction Act is helping to chart a new industrial policy for the United States. It’s bringing green jobs to red states. It’s got a lot in it to benefit cities, local governments, community nonprofits, and places of worship. All this on top of the tax incentives for individual consumers. We’re here to help you make sense of all these different pieces.

Join us for an overview of the Inflation Reduction Act Wednesday, February 21. ([link removed])
