Last Chance to Comment on Highest Efficiency Equipment Standards
BC Government

The Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Low-Carbon Innovation (EMLI) is developing a policy to increase efficiency equipment standards for space and water heating as per a commitment made in the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030.

As of Jan 1, 2030, the proposed point-of-sale standards would require all new space and water heating equipment sold and installed in BC to be high-efficiency, low-carbon equipment such as heat pumps, electric resistance, and dual fuel systems. The proposal covers heating equipment categories like residential forced air systems (i.e., gas furnaces), residential hydronic heating systems (i.e., gas boilers), domestic water heaters (i.e., storage and instantaneous water heating), and weatherized gas-fired packaged units (i.e., rooftop and makeup air units). More information on the regulatory proposal can be found by clicking here.

To submit feedback to the Province about these point-of-sale standards, email [email protected] by Thursday, February 15, 2024.

Apprenticeship Registrations Have Surpassed Pre-Pandemic Levels, says Statistics Canada
CBC

After plummeting during the pandemic, the number of people registering for apprenticeships has now bounced back. It is at its highest level since 2014, according to the latest available data from Statistics Canada. The growing interest in the trades is good news for industries such as construction that have struggled in recent years to find skilled workers.

Unfortunately, as CHBA National's research has shown the influx will still not be enough to close the labour gap in the residential construction sector. More work is needed to promote careers in residential construction and leverage the immigration system to bring in the workers who are most in demand.

While the industry does need Red Seal certified trades, it also needs many workers in jobs that don't require certification, but are skilled workers nonetheless and critical to building more homes.
