** Urgent: Act now to stop DIY abortion up to birth becoming legal
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear SPUC supporter,

Thank you to everyone who responded to our last call to action on Diana Johnson and Stella Creasy’s amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill, with the aim of decriminalising abortion.

On 25 January 2024, these amendments were debated at Committee stage and withdrawn. But the danger is not over.

Diana Johnson has now tabled a very similar amendment (New Clause 1), in the hope that it will be debated by MPs at Report stage. The earliest this can happen is 4^th March.

This amendment seeks to change criminal law so that “no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy” at any gestation. A woman who induced her abortion at home using pills (or any other method) at any stage of pregnancy, including just before natural birth, would not commit a crime.

There is still time to defeat this evil amendment. The earliest it could be debated is 4^th March, which means there is time to lobby MPs and rally public opinion. Here are three actions you can take NOW to stop dangerous self-induced abortions of viable babies being legal in this country.

1. Write to your MP

Please contact your MP, asking them to oppose and vote against Diana Johnson’s New Clause 1 to the Criminal Justice Bill.
If you can, write a handwritten letter to your MP. Writing a personal, physical letter to your MP is one of the most effective ways to be a pro-life influence on him or her.
On our webpage, you can find our briefing on the amendment which we are sending to MPs. You can use points from this briefing to inform your letter, but please put it into your own words. MPs appreciate genuine, heartfelt messages over copied-and-pasted content. There’s also a factsheet with tips on how to write to your MP. We only have a few weeks, so please write as soon as you can.

If you are not able to write a physical letter, then you can use our online webtool, which lets you find your MP and provides an editable template.

2. Get other people writing

Encourage other people to write to their MP too. We need MPs getting floods of letters opposing this barbaric amendment. Emphasize that if this goes through, it will be one of the biggest changes to abortion law in fifty years. Most people are horrified at the idea of abortion up to birth – especially women carrying out this dangerous procedure by themselves at home. Share the webpage, or forward this email to a friend.

3. Activate your church communities

For those of you who attend churches, you have access to a powerful constituency of people likely to oppose this amendment. Why not organise a letter-writing group session at your church? Having a few of you writing together would be good for mutual support and for swapping ideas about your letters with each other and would encourage more people to get involved. We will happily send you additional briefings and can talk you through it on the phone. If you would like to talk to someone about this, reply to this email and I’ll direct you to your local development officer.

You can also organise prayer in your church specifically for the defeat of this amendment. Reply to this email is you’d like advice on this.

The situation is serious – the biggest threat to the unborn we’ve faced in years. We need to act now to stop this amendment in its tracks.

Thank you for all you do to protect unborn babies and their mothers.

Kind regards,
Alithea Williams
