Friend,
We’ve just received an update from a doctor—and mother—in Rafah, Gaza, who has asked to remain anonymous, on what she and her family are facing, and I wanted to share it with you. What she shares may be incredibly distressing to hear, but bearing witness to what our staff and patients are experiencing is core to our work at Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). It is important that we share these testimonies with our supporters.
Listen to this voice memo from one of my colleagues, an MSF doctor in Rafah, for an urgent update on the current situation in Gaza.
She offers a small glimpse of the struggles people in Gaza are living through every day.
“I was awakened at midnight because of bombings and couldn’t fall asleep again. Around 5 a.m. there was a very strong airstrike,” she said. “At that moment, I felt nothing but pain, horrified. After I checked that my kids are okay, I was worried about [the rest of] my family.”
“It’s not fair, and it's not justice. I don't know how anybody can sleep knowing that our kids are suffering for nothing. We are only civilians…I don't know if we are going to survive the next hour or two.”
Medical facilities, staff, and patients should always be protected, and access to hospitals unhindered. Civilians should never be a target in war. We continue to call for an immediate and sustained ceasefire.
Help us be prepared to deliver lifesaving aid and medical care in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and beyond. Friend, make a gift to support independent, lifesaving care for people suffering from war, conflict, disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and more. |
