Dear John,
In 2024, 40 percent of Earth’s population are expected to participate in more than 70 elections.
Some, like Russia’s presidential election, will be effective shams. Others, like the coming South Africa and United Kingdom polls, will be free and fair. Not least among these are the US presidential and congressional elections, sure to be highly competitive and deeply emotional for many Americans.
By the end of the year, billions of voters will have celebrated their preferred candidates’ victories or will have mourned their losses, as they scrutinize their leaders’ performance and look to the next contest.
Or will they?

Russians will head to the polls for a presidential election in March, the first national election since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. President Vladimir Putin, who initially served in the role from 2000 to 2008, remained the de facto paramount leader while assuming the premiership, and again became president in 2012, is expected to be reelected.

The LEARN Summer Intern Program develops and educates future democracy and human rights professionals interested in working in a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to democracy and human rights. LEARN interns will work closely with their assigned teams, and serve as integral members of Freedom House. The program is open to any current undergraduate students.

Join us for the launch of Freedom in the World 2024, Freedom House's flagship report which has been tracking global trends in political rights and civil liberties annually since 1973. The event will feature the authors presenting key report findings, followed by a panel discussion on the implications of those findings and the state of democracy worldwide.
