Hi John,

I’m Rhiannon, from Cardiff, and I took part in the last Big Plastic Count with my partner and two young children. You might have seen that it’s back! And it’s the biggest ever investigation into household plastic waste, done by people like you and me.

All you have to do is count the plastic you throw away for one week in March and then submit your results at the end.

As a veteran counter, I thought I’d share a few things about my experience to give you an idea of what to expect.

- It’s fun! I signed up in a late attempt at fulfilling a new years resolution to do something good for the planet. But what I hadn’t expected was to have fun doing it. When the Count week arrived, my little ones got stuck in. We all felt like scientists, carefully preserving the bits of plastic we’d used that day in an old toy box. We sorted through it all together at the end of the week.
- It was simple to do. It couldn’t have been easier. In fact, the only hard bit was explaining why chocolate wrappers made up so much of our plastic footprint. There’s a simple website where you input your results, including a webpage to help you categorise your plastic. Or, if you prefer, you can record your results on a paper form like we did. We stuck ours on the fridge as a helpful reminder!
- We learnt a lot. Seeing how much plastic we threw away over the course of a week was startling. The kids and I talked about the environment all week. We started to notice the amount of plastic pollution on the beaches near Cardiff and wondered how it affects local wildlife - and our health!

This March, I’m taking part again, because it’s obvious that there’s still too much plastic packaging being produced. We want our politicians to represent us at the global talks for a plastics treaty and push hard to reduce plastic pollution.

People power has worked before - the plastic bag charge wouldn’t have happened if people hadn’t been calling for it! We can do it again. It might be a tall order, but together we can move mountains. Big plastic mountains.

So invite your friends, family, colleagues and WhatsApp groups. Whoever you count with, join the investigation today.
