ACLU Supporter, this is unconscionable. Right now, the House is considering a backroom deal that would reauthorize Section 702, the shadowy law the government uses to justify the mass warrantless surveillance of Americans' communications – with none of the widely-supported reforms needed to prevent abuse. If this sounds extreme, that's because it is. If the House gets away with this, they'll be passing a major, unconstitutional expansion of domestic government surveillance, while trying to hide it from the very people they're elected to represent.
Our representatives are considering holding a secret session – an anti-democratic option that uses "national security" as an excuse to keep the public in the dark – to quietly renew Section 702. The FBI has repeatedly misused this invasive law to spy on the online conversations of American protestors, journalists, political donors, and even members of Congress without a warrant. The House has only met in secret sessions four times in history. They don't get to demand secrecy while voting to continue violating our privacy. There is no question that this mass warrantless surveillance of Americans violates the Fourth Amendment. Thank you for all you do, The ACLU Team |
