John,

I grew up in Stop Six and Lake Como right here in Fort Worth. As we celebrate Black History Month, I want to take a moment to reflect on how these neighborhoods shaped me into who I am today.

These historic Black neighborhoods are part of North Texas history and emblematic of what we are still fighting for during Black History Month. They were born out of the fight for freedom – established as settlements for freedom of Black Texans in the years after the Civil War.

And these were the places I was lucky enough to call home. When I was growing up, I was surrounded by folks who were on the front lines for freedom and equality in a state like Texas.

My community taught me that through hard work, I could break down barriers and help change the tides of our nation’s history. I was lucky to be born in a community that is committed to fighting for freedom and justice for all — where my values as a man were shaped. Now, I strive to bring these same ideals with me to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the contributions of communities like the ones I grew up in. By committing to preserving our shared history, we protect what so many families like mine fought for.

John, will you commit to electing a Democratic House majority that will fight to protect and expand progress made in communities like Stop Six and Lake Como?

The new TX-33

Growing up in Fort Worth’s historic Como neighborhood, I used to dream about opportunities that would allow me a chance to experience things that filled my imagination; about American heroes and fascinating places in our country. I dreamed that I could one day make a difference in the lives of my friends and neighbors. It was that simple goal that eventually led me to Washington and the halls of Congress.

For over a decade, I have been humbled by the ongoing support and encouragement of the community that raised me. Today, I’m asking for it again.
