Announce Partnership that Will Aim to Increase Education Access

Partnership will work towards supporting current education policies that ensure
Latinos and other communities are adequately represented across local, state, and
federal education policy.

Washington, D.C. - Today, the National Education Association (NEA) and the League
of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announces a new strategic partnership
to address education disparities amongst Latino students, along with other
underrepresented communities. On Wednesday, February 14 during LULAC’s
Legislative Conference, NEA President Becky Pringle, Actor and Social Activist
Edward James Olmos, and Award-Winning Writer Rafeal Agustin will participate on a
panel discussion titled, “BRIDGING THE GAP IN LATINO EDUCATION: FOCUS ON
EDUCATIONAL DISPARITIES AND SOLUTIONS.”

“All students, no matter the language they speak, their place of birth, or their
ZIP code, deserve great public schools,” said NEA President Becky Pringle. “They
deserve public schools that instill a love of learning and that prepare them
academically and socially for bright futures. LULAC is the prominent leading
advocate for the Latino community as well as the oldest and largest Hispanic
organization in the country. We are thrilled to collaborate with LULAC to make
sure all students have what they need and deserve to step into their brilliance.
By supporting student learning in the classroom and beyond, we know that together
we can create a more just society, an economy that works for all of us, and a
more inclusive democracy,” added Pringle.

“This partnership is crucial to all Latino students across the country. As an
organization, LULAC wants to ensure that Latino children can access high quality,
early learning, and childcare programs, and provide students with the tools and
support needed to close the achievement gap they face in higher education," says
Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. "Having NEA as a partner will inform
how, along with NEA and other partners, we can continue to invest, support, and
work towards closing the education gap currently facing many in our communities,"
added Garcia.
