Dear Friend,

The importance of truthful, fact-based reporting about the government has perhaps never been more evident than right now as we confront a public health crisis. That's why I’m heartened to let you know that we received a court decision yesterday allowing PEN America's lawsuit against President Donald Trump—filed to affirm the right of journalists to provide critical coverage without threats or reprisals from the White House—to move forward.

When we first considered filing this suit there were doubters. Some questioned if PEN America could prevail and pointed out that the organization had never done anything like this before. But the Trump White House's relentless campaign to intimidate and menace journalists spurred us to push on to defend the First Amendment. So we amassed a top-flight legal team; rallied you, our Members and supporters; and proudly filed suit.

Now, in the throes of a health catastrophe, fact-based journalism that holds our leaders accountable has become a matter of life and death. With the court's decision this week, the president is on notice that bullying the media into silence violates our constitutional rights, and his oath of office.

In these perilous times, I hope you’ll consider making a contribution to PEN America.  We’ll use it to sustain the momentum of our lawsuit, and to continue to fight on behalf of writers, abroad and at home.

With enormous thanks,

Jennifer Egan
President, PEN America
