Climate change has gotten so bad that the previous top designation for hurricanes - “Category 5” - may no longer be enough. Scientists are now calling for a new “Category 6” designation for hurricanes with winds above 192mph.
This only underscores the fact that climate change is making our natural disasters worse and threatens our livelihoods like never before.
Simulations have already predicted a 50% increase in the risk of typhoons with winds over 192 mph near the Phillipines, and almost an almost 200% increase in the Gulf of Mexico.
The damages that will be caused if these sorts of hurricanes become commonplace will simply be astronomical.
This is a dire warning of what lies ahead if we do not confront climate change head-on. And we truly have no time to wait.

Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
