Friends,
I wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post about why video games don’t cause violence, but toxic gamer culture does, and how the gaming culture has become a fertile recruitment ground for white supremacists and misogynists who actively want to harm women.
How does this happen? Look at the products some of my colleagues in the gaming industry ship. Rape is commonplace. So is racism.
And there’s little accountability on the platforms, because parts of the community view any kind of accountability as censorship. This, in turn, allows bigotry to fester, making the community ripe for people like Steve Bannon who want to grow the alt right. And they have done just that.
Despite what some politicians say, video games are not responsible for mass shootings, but video game culture is broken, and we have to fix it. Please help elect me to Congress, and my unique experience as a game developer targeted by the alt-right will help me bring much-needed structural change to solve this problem and deny a breeding ground for the alt-right.
