Friend, six years ago this month, I got the phone call that no father should ever have to get.
My daughter, Jaime, was killed in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Feb. 14, 2018. She and her classmates were brutally murdered in their classrooms—where they should’ve been safe from violence, focused on learning and pursuing their dreams.
Since we lost Jaime, I’ve made it my mission to save other kids, parents and communities from the gut-wrenching loss that my family and I have experienced. No one else should have to lose a child the way I did. No one else should have to lose a parent, a sibling, a friend or a loved one to preventable gun violence. I firmly believe that by working together, we can stop gun violence from ripping our communities apart.
On Sunday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. EST, I’m joining the AFT, the Albert Shanker Institute and Share My Lesson for a discussion on my book, American Carnage: Shattering the Myths that Fuel Gun Violence. I hope you’ll join us to talk about it. Click here to register.
This conversation with AFT President Randi Weingarten will expand peoples’ knowledge and understanding of the gun violence epidemic we face. In the book and in this web discussion, we’ll confront and dismantle the myths surrounding gun violence in America. I hope our discussion challenges peoples’ views and helps shape a safer future for our kids and generations to come.
I’m looking forward to this discussion—please join us. Click here to register, and I’ll see you on Sunday, Feb. 18.
In solidarity,
Fred Guttenberg
