Republicans blow the lid off a program that spends over $56,000 per asylum seeker while spending far less addressing Maine?s homeless and nursing home crises ?
STATE HOUSE ? Legislative Republicans held a press conference today to deliver shocking new numbers on state spending related to thousands of asylum seekers coming to Maine for free housing. The migration is part of Governor Mills? pledge to bring in 75,000 new Mainers by 2029.?
These costs have largely been hidden from the public and are now being exposed in an effort to demand accountability and a results-driven plan. Taxpayer money is being diverted away from pressing state needs as Mainers languish on housing lists for years or waiting lists for nursing homes. ?
