BJS consults with tribes about 2024 tribal justice data collections

BJS Acting Director Kevin M. Scott, PhD, has invited the 574 federally recognized tribes and tribal nations to three listening sessions to discuss the development and implementation of the 2024 Census of Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies (CTLEA) and the 2024 Census of Tribal Court Systems (CTCS). The goal of these sessions is to learn from tribal leaders and the tribal justice community about data gaps and needs and to ensure survey questions are relevant and useful to tribal communities.

The 2024 CTLEA will provide vital information to tribal justice agencies, state and local agencies, policy makers, and the general public about the services tribal agencies provide and the needs and obstacles they face in their efforts to serve their communities.

The 2024 CTCS will capture unique attributes of tribal criminal justice agencies, including information on tribal court systems, the impact of recent changes in legislation as it relates to tribal courts, and resource, staffing, and training needs at the tribal court level.
