Hey John,

When I worked in education, I always looked forward to February. Black History Month was one of my favorite times of year. There’s nothing like teaching about historical Black icons and seeing a child’s face light up with new knowledge and power. For so many kids, it’s the first time they really see themselves in our history!

I’m focused on Black History Month in Congress, too. We need to make sure we’re accurately teaching history. That’s why I introduced the African American History Act to give educators the resources they need to teach the vibrant history of Black Americans and tell the truth about our country.

And here’s the thing: We’re still making Black history every day. until 2020, my district had never had a Black representative in Congress – even though our district is ~30% Black. I’m honored to be my district’s first Black representative, and it’s not something I take lightly.

That’s why I fight so hard to bring money back to our community (over $1 billion from grants and legislation so far) and make sure our young people have the resources they need to dream big and go far. Every afterschool program, mentor initiative, and research grant is Black history in the making.

Let’s keep building community power and spreading inspiration, innovation, and motivation to our next generation of leaders.✊🏿

Peace and love,

Jamaal
