Dear MoveOn member,
John—Did you see the big news this weekend?
The New York Times published hard data showing that winning this fall's election will NOT be about turning so-called "swing voters" into Biden voters or convincing Trump voters to change their minds. Instead, it'll be about turning out people who lean Democratic but who might not go to the polls at all.1
That's a huge validation for MoveOn's election program. Because it's precisely the strategy that we're going to use!
MoveOn knows exactly how to turn out voters who need an extra nudge and reminders to vote from their friends, family, or social networks. Through a program called "vote tripling," we did it in 2020 and 2022—and are gearing up to do it again this year.
Vote tripling is based on relational organizing—the proven idea that people are much more likely to listen to their friends and social networks than to anonymous ads and outreach from strangers.
MoveOn's vote tripling program is highly effective at getting out the vote. In controlled experiments, we showed that it resulted in 50,000 unlikely voters casting a ballot in 2020 in key states and districts. And, in 2022, MoveOn members helped turn out MORE VOTERS than the entire 2020 margin of victory for President Biden!
We also demonstrated that it's highly cost-effective—as much as five times more effective, dollar for dollar compared to traditional methods like TV ads and mass text messages. Take a look at this chart:
While we continue to see a slew of media coverage about the importance of turning out "swing voters" and "undecideds," the new analysis from The Times confirms that the "swing voter" is a myth.2,3
That's why MoveOn is not going after mythical "undecideds" or relying on campaign tactics that haven't worked since the 1990s. We're focused on vote tripling to help get Democratic-leaning voters who don't always vote to the polls, so we can defeat Trump and his anti-democracy plans. And now, we need your help to fund it:
Will you join us in this fight by donating $9?
Your financial support will help MoveOn keep Trump out of the White House and hold him accountable for his many crimes.
We know that vote tripling works. But it is expensive and resource-intensive. Ultimately, MoveOn needs to raise $32 million to execute our plan in 2024, or we will have to scale back our ambitions.
It's a big goal, but with the power and generosity of MoveOn members, it's achievable. Since we wrote to MoveOn members this weekend about new analysis by The New York Times, 650 MoveOn members have already chipped in.
And together, we can accomplish amazing things. After all, in 2020, MoveOn raised more than $50 million—and, together, we defeated Trump! Now, we need to do it again, one last time.
If everyone reading this email pitched in just $7.44, our goal would be met. But not everyone will read this message—and many are not able to give.
Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? The MAGA movement's book bans have forced teachers and librarians across the country to remove books from their shelves and censor what young people can learn. MoveOn is fighting back, including by filling a "Banned Bookmobile" with books that the far right has banned and driving it to key cities and towns to raise the visibility of book bans, hand out banned books for free, and bring people together to stop censorship. To keep up the fight against book bans and the MAGA politicians who support them, we need your help.
