Commissioner Brad Lindsay
Legislature Kicks off 2024 Session
Minnesota Veterans and their families received an historic investment from the 2023 Legislature, ensuring that the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) can continue to provide the highest quality programs and services to those who served our country. We are grateful for this support, detailed in our 2023 Veterans Legislation Session Summary. From expanding the Minnesota GI Bill to furthering efforts to end Veteran homelessness, from supporting our current operations to investing in the future renovation of the 120-year-old Hastings Veterans Home campus, the second annual Veterans Omnibus Bill ensured that Minnesota Veterans were a priority.

Harold Anderson has lived through 26 presidential elections, the perfection of nuclear fission, the development of jet engines and the first electric computer, the innovation of television, the assassination of a U.S. president, the first moon landing, the creation of Teflon, and the invention of transistors, aerosol spray cans, portable hair dryers, electric razors, and so much more.
Recently, Harold celebrated his 103rd birthday as a Resident of Minnesota Veterans Homes - Minneapolis. His adult children joined him for an afternoon of cake and ice cream along with his favorite activity: bingo. A number of local TV stations showed up to help share this milestone with the community and public radio even sent a shout out during its daily broadcast.

On Monday, Jan. 22, three Veterans ? who served in eras from World War II to Vietnam ? became the first Residents to call the newly opened Minnesota Veterans Homes - Montevideo their new home.
Long-time Montevideo community member and World War II Veteran William Homan, who served in the Army Air Corp, was the very first Resident at the Montevideo Home. ?I made many, many trips to the State Capitol, helping people understand the need,? said Mr. Homan. ?I can?t tell you what an honor it is to be the first Veteran to move in. This will really benefit Montevideo and the area for a long time.?
Montevideo Veterans Home Administrator Ashley Bormann notes, ?The facility is absolutely beautiful, and our team members are thrilled to now be working on site. This is really a meaningful day for our community and all of western Minnesota.?

Minnesota Veterans Homes - Silver Bay was delighted to accept a generous $10,000 donation from the Veterans Community Thrift Store (VCTS) located in Hibbing. This donation will be used to purchase a van to help transport Veterans Home Residents to events and other social and leisure activities in the community.
The dream of a VCTS began in 2016 with three Veteran friends: Larry Pocrnich, Army, a medically-retired Iron Range police officer; Bill Bean, Navy, a former Veterans Service Officer; and Bob Fluguear, Marine, Iron Range miner, now deceased. They approached the Hibbing-based Salvation Army-run thrift store with an offer to purchase its local operations and physical space and continue to run and grow the business, but ultimately direct all profits to Veteran-specific causes. The community responded positively to this idea; in fact, just one year into their work, the VCTS outgrew its location and moved to their current (larger) site located at 2003 1st Avenue North in Hibbing.
