Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Michigan State shooting that took the lives of three students and injured five others.
Those few seconds where I didn't know if my son would survive the shooting at his school in 2021 were the worst of my life. John, I never want anyone to have to go through that. But 14 months after the Oxford shooting, fifty kids and families who had already survived one mass shooting were experiencing the unthinkable for a second time.
Enough is enough.
The sad reality is: these tragedies are preventable. But instead of taking steps toward passing common-sense gun legislation, Republicans in Congress, like Michigan's own John James, would rather align themselves with the same groups standing against things like increased background checks, bans on military-style weapons, and more.
One year ago today I received an active shooter alert on my phone and realized that Oxford survivors were locking down for the second time in their young lives. It was also one year ago today that I made the decision to run for Congress.
John, now more than ever, we need our elected officials to prioritize our children's safety. And now more than ever, I'm determined to move the needle on gun laws in our country and keep tragedies like what happened in Lansing, Parkland and Oxford from happening again.
Thank you for reading this note, and together, I know we can continue to unite communities to address gun violence in our country.
In solidarity,
Emily Busch
