Herbert Hoover lost the 1940 Republican nomination.

Only Grover Cleveland was able to retain his party’s nomination after losing the previous election — and he’s the only one who made it back to the White House.

That was over 125 years ago.

Cleveland never incited a violent insurrection at the Capitol to overturn his election loss.

He was never impeached.

He wasn’t able to command the attention of millions with bombastic posts on social media.

Trump has, and he is poised to win the Republican Party’s nomination regardless.

This election is going to test the guardrails of our democracy in a way no other election has. We have never had a presidential election where the loser of the last election never conceded and maintained that they were the rightful winner.
