Herbert,

February is Black History Month, a time for us to reflect on the many contributions and achievements of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight for equality and justice.

Though we’ve made great strides over these past few decades, the fight for equality and justice is far from over, and we cannot ignore the inequalities and systemic racism that persist in our communities today.

Unfortunately, we see many Republicans across the country rolling back the progress we’ve made, seeking to disenfranchise Black voters and communities of color by enacting harmful voter ID laws, limiting early voting periods, and restricting access to the ballot box.

In Congress, I will remain committed to protecting and expanding voting rights. We should be making it easier for voters to cast their ballots across Maryland and the country, not more difficult. I know we also have work to do to improve our healthcare, criminal justice, and education systems.

Let this Black History Month serve as a reminder of the trailblazers who have paved the way for progress before us and acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equality and justice for all. Together, we can ensure that the fight for equality continues to be a top priority, both in Maryland and in Congress.

Onward,

Johnny O
