Wendell Berry on How to Be a Poet and a Complete Human Being “When power corrupts, poetry cleanses,” John F. Kennedy proclaimed in his touching tribute to Robert Frost, celebrating poetry as “the means of saving power from itself.” And although poetry itself exerts a singular power over the human spirit, as one of the greatest poets of all time observed, it is hardly a power that comes easily to the poet: “Writing poetry is an unnatural act,” Elizabeth Bishop wrote when she was only twenty-three. So how, then, does one come to master this unnatural power — how does one become a Poet?
In this recording from the consistently transcendent On Being, Berry brings his beautifully aged voice to the poem — which is in many ways not only about how to be a poet, but also about how to be an artist of any kind. With its insistence on the vitalizing power of silence and stillness and self-refinement, it is perhaps, above all, about how to be a complete human being.

WorkTrump’s Legal Cases: Here, There and Everywhere That is how it has been for nearly a year now as Mr. Trump has become ensnared in a web of legal cases so tangled that it almost defies comprehension. The panoply of proceedings amounts to a test of the judicial system’s capacity to handle a range of criminal and civil accusations against a once and potentially future president fairly, efficiently and against the backdrop of a campaign in which he has made his treatment a central issue. WorkTrump Steps Up, Helping Biden Just When the President Needs Him That does not mean that age is no longer a political liability for Mr. Biden, who at 81 is already the oldest president in American history and would be 86 at the end of a second term. While Mr. Trump is close behind him at 77, the special counsel’s characterization of the president as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” proved searing and damaging. WorkDefending Troops, Haley Says Golf Course Is Closest Trump Has Come to Combat She criticized the former president’s comments over the weekend insinuating that her husband, who is deployed to Africa with the National Guard, left the country to escape her. Those remarks, Ms. Haley said on Monday, were insulting to all military personnel, adding, “With that kind of disrespect for the military, he’s not qualified to be the president of the United States, because I don’t trust him to protect them.” WorkA Left-vs.-Left House Battle, Funded by a Split Over Israel The deadly war has divided centrist Democrats from progressives like Ms. Bush, who has condemned Israel for its response, seeking to hold up aid while pressing for a cease-fire as the death toll in Gaza has mounted. Late last month, Ms. Bush and the House’s only Palestinian American, Rashida Tlaib, were the lone opponents of a resolution to bar Hamas members and those who participated in the attacks against Israel on Oct. 7 from the United States. WorkCorporate America's economists want the Fed to loosen up These days corporate America is looking at the opposite problem: Interest rates are at two-decade highs, and the Fed is trying to slow down economic growth instead of speed it up. The central bank seems to view most of the risk being on the upside, so Jerome Powell & co. have been more than happy to stand pat as the economy rumbles on relatively undisturbed by their interference. WorkTesla's drive to make its EV charging an industry standard is working In June 2023, Stellantis and six other automakers including General Motors and Mercedes-Benz formed a joint venture to create the IONNA charging network, which aims to have at least 30,000 charging stations with NACS and CCS across North America by 2030. The company said today’s announcement on its adoption of NACS “builds upon the IONNA charging network joint venture.” WorkTesla, Chevy, and Ford cars were named among the 12 best in the US by consumers When it comes to full-size pickup truck sales, the Ford F-150 is king (unless you combine Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra sales). If you want the best full-size pickup truck on the market, however, you’re going to want to look at the Ram 1500. It doesn’t necessarily have the lowest base price, but you get an incredibly spacious, well-rounded and comfortable truck for your money. WorkWorkWorkTesla is struggling but it can still count on cash for selling carbon credits The latest round of cuts follows similar moves in Germany from the American EV maker. It also means that the Model Y now starts at more than $7,000 less than it did at this time last year. Back in February 2023, the American EV maker first started messing with its prices when it cut $1,000 off the price of the Model Y Performance. This was followed by cuts to other cars in Tesla’s lineup, including the Model 3 and Model X. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkOpen letter criticising PEN America's stance on Israel-Gaza war reaches 500 signatories The open letter has coincided with #BooksforGaza, a fundraising sale of signed books donated by authors including Salman Rushdie, Sally Rooney, Ali Smith and Kamila Shamsie. The auction, which ends on Monday evening, has raised over £55,000 for The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children's Fund, an organisation that helps transport injured Gazan children to Lebanon for medical and social treatment and care. WorkRafah's 1 million refugees fear Israeli onslaught after night of bombardment Sayed Ghoneim, an Egyptian security analyst and former major-general, said he was hopeful that Washington could intervene. "The US will never allow violations of the peace treaty, as the sponsor," he said. "There is clearly some mistrust from the Israeli side towards the Egyptians. Coordination between Israel and Egypt needs to return." WorkRepublicans say Trump call for Russia to attack Nato allies was just fine, actually But Liz Cheney, the former Republican Wyoming congresswoman who became a Trump opponent after the January 6 attack on Congress, called Nato “the most successful military alliance in history … essential to deterring war and defending American security”. She added: “No sane American president would encourage Putin to attack our Nato allies. No honorable American leaders would excuse or endorse this.” WorkWhy Intel Stock Rallied Monday Morning Bank of America is an advertising partner of The Ascent, a Motley Fool company. WorkWay-too-early 2024 NFL Power Rankings: Wait, neither Super Bowl team is No. 1? The Panthers made Dave Canales their third non-interim head coach in less than three years and fourth since 2019. They did it to help turn around quarterback Bryce Young, whom Canales called an \"amazing talent.\'\' Canales hopes to do what he did for Baker Mayfield this past season and Geno Smith in 2022. Both had career seasons. Young needs support after ranking next to last in Total QBR during his rookie season. -- David Newton WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkMen's Power Rankings: We have questions for Kentucky and Wisconsin BYU Cougars: Despite the loss at Oklahoma on Tuesday, the Cougars have won three of their past four and have a pretty manageable -- at least in terms of the Big 12 -- upcoming schedule. Fousseyni Traore has been a real factor since returning to regular minutes following a hamstring injury: 18.8 points, 7.0 rebounds on 63.8% shooting in his past four games. WorkWorkUnruly fan behavior draws golfers' ire in Phoenix The Phoenix Open, dubbed the \"Greatest Show on Grass,\" is unlike anything in golf. Masses of up to 200,000 fans pack TPC Scottsdale\'s Stadium Course with cheers, boos and the occasional beer shower. WorkWorkHave Chelsea turned the corner? Win at Palace shows promise, but inconsistency looms The start of the second half was delayed as referee Michael Oliver was having technical issues with his mic and, to fill the void as the players kicked the ball around to keep warm, those in charge of the stadium playlist opted for Bob Marley\'s \"Three Little Birds.\" Supporters from both sides sang it loud into the chilly south London sky. But out of the two sets of fans, it\'ll be Chelsea\'s supporters who are starting to believe that eventually, everything might just be all right. WorkWorkNCAA gymnastics Week 6: Haleigh Bryant leads the all-around, while OU stays No. 1 Amari Celestine, Missouri: We\'ve been excited about this routine since before the season even started -- The music! The choreography! The dive roll! -- and have been eagerly awaiting another opportunity to share the Mizzou junior\'s routine. Thankfully for everyone who enjoys show-stopping performances, that time is now. On Friday, Celestine even got the Kentucky fans at Rupp Arena involved, and earned her best score of the season with a 9.95. WorkUFC 298 storylines: Can Topuria pull off the upset vs. Volkanovski? Dern is not undefeated, as Suarez is, but she\'s a grappling ace with more submission wins than any other strawweight, active or otherwise. That speaks to the depth of this weight class, which also features the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in women\'s MMA, Zhang Weili. WorkWorkHouston Megachurch Shooter Had an AR-15 and Brought Her 7-Year-Old Son Officials identified the woman as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, who lived in Conroe, Texas, north of Houston, and had a history of previous arrests, including one in 2022 on misdemeanor weapons charges. Chief Troy Finner of the Houston Police Department said that she had “a mental health history that is documented.” WorkGeorgia Judge Will Hear Evidence on Relationship Between Trump Prosecutors But the judge also ruled out delving into the qualifications of Mr. Wade, who defense attorneys have said lacked relevant experience and was unqualified to take on such a high-profile case. The judge said that, “in my mind, as long as a lawyer has a heartbeat and a bar card” the appointment would be “a matter within the district attorney’s discretion.” WorkPelosi’s Hometown Paper Backs Her, With an Eye on the Calendar The editorial board, which does not usually conduct endorsement interviews for candidates with no serious challengers, praised Ms. Pelosi’s “strength as a political leader” in its endorsement this time, and noted that she was “tough, charming and pragmatic” when she met with the board. WorkBig Burden of Migrant Influx Strains Denver The city has begun discharging dozens of families from hotels that it rented to house them temporarily, creating fresh hardship for those being displaced. And this week, the city will begin imposing a first round of budget cuts unrelated to migrant services, starting with reductions in parks and motor vehicle services. WorkTrump Attends Court Hearing on Access to Classified Documents Highly classified material that prosecutors do not want to share with a defendant in national security cases typically has to do with sources and methods of intelligence collection, said David Aaron, a former federal national security prosecutor. These are details that prosecutors say have little bearing on the evidence used against the defendant at trial, he said. WorkHow Special Is New York’s Special Election? Suozzi, for his part, has refused to cede the issue, making a tougher stance on immigration a centerpiece of his campaign. He has called on Biden to lock down the border, and said a group of migrant men charged with assaulting police officers should be deported. He also criticized Pilip for opposing a bipartisan Senate border bill. WorkWorkAustin Cancels Trip to Europe After Returning to Hospital Mr. Austin, General Ryder said, may attend the Wednesday meeting virtually if his health allows. Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is also expected to attend Wednesday’s meeting virtually, General Ryder said. WorkHere Are the Republicans Breaking With Their Party to Back Ukraine Aid Some Republicans who have balked at the bill have suggested that they could ultimately back the legislation on final passage after trying to use their opposition to win the chance to change it — an effort that has so far not proved successful. But whether more than half of the 49 Republicans will vote for it remains an open question. WorkWorkWorkCongress to Examine U.S. Spy Agencies’ Work on Havana Syndrome The House committee announced the investigation in a letter sent to Avril D. Haines, the director of national intelligence, on Thursday. In the letter, Representative Rick Crawford, Republican of Arkansas, said the inquiry would examine “allegations of improper suppression” of information related to the incidents between intelligence agencies and between the executive branch and Congress. WorkBiden’s First TikTok Post Jokes About Super Bowl Conspiracy Theory And was he indeed responsible for a vast conspiracy theory floated on the far right positing that the White House and the N.F.L. had colluded so the Chiefs would win the game and somehow help his re-election campaign? (Cue “Dark Brandon.” Mr. Biden also shared an image of the meme on X shortly after the game, writing, “Just like we drew it up.”) |
