Dear john,
Last week, the Senate revealed its long anticipated border deal. The bill was a non-starter in the House, and was voted down by Republicans in the Senate.
Why? Because this deal, in reality, would have done nothing to ensure that any of its provisions are actually followed by Joe Biden. Simply put, the bill would have created a threshold of 5,000 illegal border crossings that must be hit in order for border shutdown measures to take effect. By all means, even one is too many. However, Joe Biden would still have been allowed to declare a national emergency and effectively ignore that.
This is on top of the other disastrous provisions included in the bill, such as more funding for processing asylum claims, rather that for deportations or effective border security measures. There was no funding included for a border wall. Instead, there was a provision for 50,000 green cards on top of the 60,000 for poorly vetted Afghans that arrived after Biden's botched withdrawal in the summer of 2021.
This bill prioritized and essentially reaffirmed Biden's open border policies, rather than border security. There was no way we could accept this deal, especially when Biden has had the authority for three straight years to end the crisis at the border. He doesn't need Congress to pass any new laws for him to do that--the laws are already on the books!
Folks in Texas' Fourth District, along with a groundswell of Americans across the country have made their voices heard loud and clear for the past few years that we need to secure our border. I believe we have folks like you to thank for stopping this deal.
For Texas and Liberty,
