PRESS RELEASE
Congressman Al Green Leads Distribution of 1,100 American Flags and U.S. Constitutions to Honor Veterans During National Salute to Veteran Patients Week
(Houston, TX) — On Monday, February 12, 2024, Congressman Al Green observed National Salute to Veteran Patients Week by leading the distribution of U.S. Constitutions and 1,100 American flags that were flown over the U.S. Capitol to Veterans. The distribution took place at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) to honor and extend appreciation to the brave men and women who have served and protected our nation. Congressman Al Green kicked off the event by making opening remarks by phone, as he is currently recovering from surgery in Washington, D.C.
National Salute to Veterans Patients Week occurs annually and provides the public an opportunity to express their gratitude to Veterans. The Office of Congressman Al Green was joined by volunteers from the International Longshoremen’s Association, who assisted in folding the 1,100 flags. The flags were distributed to inpatient and outpatient Veterans at MEDVAMC and the neighboring Veterans Benefits Administration Houston Regional Office by Associate Director of the VA Hospital Jeremiah Jackson, the International Longshoremen’s Association, the Fort Bend County Black Nurses Association, Unified Veterans of America, American Legion Post 416, NAMVETS 36, as well as members of the United States Air Force, United States Army, United States Marines, United States Navy, and United States Coast Guard.
Congressman Al Green stated, “For many years, I have held this flag distribution in partnership with Director Francisco Vasquez of MEDVAMC to acknowledge the immense sacrifices these men and women have made. The bravery and courage required to serve does not assure a Veteran's safe return home. Many of these Veterans have faced unimaginable challenges and hardships, yet they continue to stand strong as symbols of resilience and strength. This flag distribution serves as a reminder that freedom is not free and that their service is not forgotten.”
