“Democrats passed record climate spendin–”

It’s not enough, folks.

Every time you hear Democrats brag about the “most climate spending ever” this election, remember that it’s not even close to enough (and tell them that).

For years we’ve been told that +1.5°C warming was the point of no return that had to be avoided at all costs. It was the basis of the Paris Climate Accords; a matter of survival for low-lying nations in the Global South; and a matter of long-term survival of the human species.

Last month I shared a Washington Post report that predicted we will hit +1.5° sometime in 2024 and put us on a fast track for +2°C.

Six weeks later, here we are:

A graph showing temperature anomaly trends towards + 2 degrees celsius spanning from 1940 to present day, with a massive spike from 2022 to the early part of 2024 showing roughly 1.3 degrees celsius.

Democrats keep bragging about the fact they’ve passed the biggest climate bill in history, but the critical data they keep leaving out is that it’s far too little, and almost too late for all of us.

This isn’t just my assessment as a lifelong antiwar and climate activist, and it’s not only the assessment of climate experts the world over (though that should be enough).

This truth is so obvious that even the world’s biggest polluters are raising the alarm. For over a decade now the Pentagon has called climate change the biggest threat to our national security – ignoring the fact that the U.S. military uses more fuel and emits more carbon than many industrialized nations.

The truth is so obvious that even Wall Street’s favorite, BLOOMBERG, says that “record climate spending” isn’t enough.

A graphic featuring a headline from Bloomberg News set against a windmill erected in the distance and components of windmills lying on the ground awaiting installation. The headline reads: “Global Clean Energy Spending Surges to $1.8 trillion. It’s not enough.

Every time I share a climate update, it’s a lot of bad news to take in. But there is good news, too – we have the power to change this if we face the uncomfortable truths right now.

First, we can’t continue on the same path with the same leaders and expect different results.

Take another look at that chart, particularly the last quarter where the temperatures began to skyrocket. My opponent has served in Congress for every year you see represented in that quadrant – and all the while he’s been cashing Big Oil’s checks.

No congressman on Big Oil’s payroll can be trusted to take the climate crisis seriously. I’m a lifelong antiwar and climate activist, and I need your help to defeat fossil fuel’s favorite Democrat in Washington State. Can you pitch in today?

There’s no two ways about this, we have to stop putting carbon in the atmosphere.

No carbon swaps.

No tax breaks for offsets.

No incremental reductions in emissions.

We have to get off fossil fuels. Period.

This is why, in addition to running for office, I routinely take part in protests, and actively support the direct action activism of groups like Climate Defiance and Just Say No to Oil.

We need to attack this problem from multiple angles. And while direct actions are effective, we also have to demand better from our elected representatives.

Both Republicans and Democrats have accelerated global warming by EXPANDING fossil fuel extraction and pushing endless American militarism.

The Republicans are at least honest enough to tell us they want to “drill, baby, drill.” But Democrats like my opponent have been gaslighting us for decades, first with “carbon swap” tax breaks for corporations – now bragging about spending 1/4  what they need to spend for a serious climate plan.

I organized for years within the Democratic Party pushing for serious climate action. I met dead ends at every turn precisely because of men like Rick Larsen and their corporate puppet-masters.

Help me win this seat for working people and carry our collective voices into the heart of Congress – where we will not be ignored.

In solidarity,

Jason Call
