We can’t rebuild the economy on the backs of dead seniors and people with disabilities.

John,

Last night, Fox News’ Brit Hume called the Texas Lt. Governor’s suggestion that seniors would willingly die to restore the economy “an entirely reasonable viewpoint.” Hume is considered one of Fox News’ “adults in the room,” yet he’s validating an idea that is not only inhumane, it doesn’t make a lick of sense. These horrific opinions are now in heavy rotation on the President’s favorite channel.

Social Security Works has been calling out Trump’s war on seniors before it became so literal. Chip in $7 to help us protect seniors and people with disabilities!

The idea that we could just let people die―in any number―will not fix this. This idea is as foolish as it is fiendish.

More than 50% of people in New York who have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 are younger than 50.

If we want to restore economic activity, we have to beat this virus, not perform human sacrifices at the altar of Wall Street.

Americans are doing a very important job―saving hundreds of thousands of lives. We need Congress to recognize that social distancing is work and properly compensate people for staying inside, preventing the virus from spreading and saving lives. Chip in $7 to help us protect seniors and people with disabilities!

Stay inside and keep washing your hands.

John,

Donald Trump and his Republican cronies are demanding human sacrifices in their war on seniors.

Think I’m overselling it? Last night, Donald Trump went on TV and promised to push cities and states to end social distancing measures in the next week. Trump’s advisors and allies are all over cable news claiming that senior citizens should lay down their lives for a stock market rally, prompting headlines like this from NBC News:

Screenshot of a real headline from NBC News: "Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggests he, other seniors, willing to die to get economy going again."

We can’t rebuild the economy on the backs of dead seniors and people with disabilities.

Over the course of the next two weeks, American cities from New York to New Orleans are projected to exceed their hospital capacities, running out of ventilators and protective gear for doctors and nurses. If we want to restore economic activity, we have to beat this virus, not sacrifice a generation.

It’s true―the US economy has shut down in a way that would have been hard to imagine last month. But Americans are doing a very important job―saving hundreds of thousands of lives. We need Congress to recognize that social distancing is work and properly compensate people for staying inside, preventing the virus from spreading and saving lives.

Trump’s War on Seniors began early in his administration. As President, Donald Trump has:

  • Spent the first year of his administration trying to destroy Medicare and Medicaid through Trumpcare

  • Called for trillions of dollars in cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in every budget released by his White House

  • Placed a pharmaceutical executive in charge of the Department of Health and Human Services

  • Refused to take action to prevent a pandemic that is most deadly to seniors and people with disabilities

Our Social Security system is an intergenerational compact, a promise that we make to each other. Donald Trump’s selfish and reckless behavior as President has undermined this compact every step of the way, and this latest step will literally kill people. We’re fighting back! Chip in $7 to protect seniors!

PS: COVID-19 is no joke, and it doesn’t just affect seniors. 56% of hospitalized patients in New York City are under the age of 50. Everyone, no matter the age, should try not to get it. Wash your hands and stay inside!
