Celebrating a legacy of outspoken advocacy

——————————

Everglades restoration relies on passionate advocates who are willing to speak truth to power. That was a defining characteristic of Friends of the Everglades founder Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and a foundational legacy that we take seriously to this day. It’s also what inspired the founding of Friends’ sister organization, VoteWater (formerly Bullsugar.org) in 2014.

As a supporter of VoteWater’s unabashed truth-seeking, we would like to invite you to attend Friends of the Everglades’ Marjory Stoneman Douglas Legacy Celebration on March 4, 2024. This lively lunchtime event at the Biltmore Hotel in Miami is toasting “Voices of the Everglades” — and will feature some of today’s most vocal Everglades advocates.

Known for his sharp-tongued writing that often took on the sugar industry during his years as a Miami Herald columnist, author and journalist Carl Hiaasen will headline the event with a keynote address. Betty Osceola, a forthright Everglades steward and member of the Panther Clan of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, will be presented with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Defender of the Everglades Award. And WPLG anchor and environmental champion Louis Aguirre will emcee it all.

These impactful voices are among the driving forces behind Everglades conservation, preservation and advocacy. We’d be honored to count you among the attendees as we celebrate our mutual passion for this one-of-a-kind ecosystem.
