Hello,
In this week’s edition, I explain the importance of aiming at the highest good and paying attention to what interests you. Then, Derek from the “More Plates More Dates” podcast joins me to discuss his journey into the fitness industry and how to develop a sense of self-motivation — and adventure. From the archives, I address why living with a significant other before marriage is not a good idea.
Advice
Pursue What Interests You
If you are properly oriented in life and if your spirit is in order, you will aim at the highest thing that you can possibly imagine and that will point you in the proper direction. Then you will attempt to treat everyone — including yourself — as if they have a value equivalent related to that higher order goal.
Why would you aim at anything other than the highest good you can imagine? If you are going to aim, you might as well aim at what is good. If you are going to aim at what is good, you might as well aim at what is best. And maybe, if you aimed at and progressed toward what was best, it would even be better if you could take everybody along for the ride. Even if you are too cynical, bitter, faithless, and nihilistic to think that is a good idea, you can at least see the logic, the utility, and the beauty in it.
But you know perfectly well from being in school that it is virtually impossible, for example, to study for a test if you are not interested in the subject. You can force yourself to do it, but you are going to fight yourself, and depending to some degree on your discipline, you are probably not going to do that great of a job. However, if you are interested in the subject and it captures your attention, you pursue it. It is not a problem because you enjoy it, it engrosses you, and it is much easier to learn and to remember.
Sometimes when you go about your business in life, something will capture your attention and interest — which is how what is interesting makes itself manifest. You cannot exactly choose what you are interested in; it sort of chooses you. When that happens, you can decide whether or not you are going to pursue it — and how seriously.

‘It’s Going To Be OK’: Jocko Willink On Dealing With Sadness And Forgiving Yourself
The precondition for forgiving yourself is, first of all, to sort out whether or not you are accusing yourself too viciously like a tyrant. Then let’s assume that there is some leftover compelling evidence that you did do something wrong. Now you have to figure out what you did wrong and you have to figure out what you would have done differently and what you will do differently in the future. My sense is, if you can set yourself up so that you have learned from the mistake you made so you would not repeat it, then you get to go on with your life.

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Live With Your Significant Other Before Marriage
On one of my tour stops last year, I was asked about why I advise against cohabitation before marriage. First, simulating commitment is not possible. Evidence shows that people who live together before marriage are more likely to get divorced. A common argument in favor of living together before marriage is to learn what you need to learn in order to decide who you should marry — or learn how to act if you do get married. But if the goal is to help your marriage last, factual evidence reveals living together before marriage does not work. Instead, to call the best out of yourself and your partner, you move forward in faith — because faith is what makes movement into the unknown possible.
