Friends and Comrades- With the Legislature wrapping up this week, we are still hoping for the possibility of progress on a few key bills and memorials. However, we are deeply disappointed that a number of important bills have been killed or stalled. In particular, we found the defeat of SB 145, "Dignity Not Detention," to be particularly disappointing. This bill was killed by 6 Democrats joining forces with race-baiting MAGA Republicans to continue the inhumane and immoral detention of migrants in our state. We must continue to build working-class power to let elected officials of all parties know that we demand dignity for all people who reside in our wonderful state.

This Week at the Legislature:

At this point, one of the bills best positioned to provide genuine material benefit to citizens of New Mexico is SB 3, Paid Family Medical Leave Act. It was just passed by the House Health and Human Services Committee and is on to a full vote of the House! Please contact your Representative to tell them how important the passage of this bill is to all New Mexicans.

Thanks you to everyone who was able to attend events demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza last week! We have heard that there's still a chance that House Memorial 8, which demands that our national representatives support a ceasefire, could make it to the House floor this week. It is currently still in the House Judiciary Committee. Please call members of this committee, especially Chair Christine Chandler, to let them know you want to see this Memorial advance to a full vote of the House!

Unfortunately, it appears the the Local Solar Access Fund will not be included in this session's budget. However, this issue is not going to disappear, so please call your legislator to let them know you want to see funding for this fund!

Email your legislator in support of the Fund here.

(HB 108)

SB 186: Rent Control Prohibitions has effectively been killed from the start of this session, stuck in the Senate Committees Committee. Allowing rent control in New Mexico is likely going to be a multi-year fight, but we're encouraged to see champions for this idea in the New Mexico Legislature.
