ADF's Grip on the GOP & The Courts
==================================

*The ADF serves as a brutal force in the legal realm for religious zealotry and the radical right's attempts to control our lives, choices, and families.*

Newly-elected Speaker Mike Johnson is one of many recent examples of the Alliance Defending Freedom's close ties to power in the American government. From the House of Representatives to SCOTUS, the ADF has an undeniable sway on American politics. While the ADF is a 501(c)(3), the organization's ties to lawmakers have been under scrutiny as those on the fringe right hold more demonstrable power.

In the House
============

As reported by *The 19th*, Mike Johnson, the GOP's replacement for Kevin McCarthy as Speaker, previously worked with the ADF: ***"Before [he] was in public office, the Louisiana Republican's restrictive stances on gender identity, abortion and sexuality were honed at the conservative Christian legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, where he served as a senior spokesperson and attorney."***

Johnson's past statements on abortion and LGBTQ+ issues parallel the organization's legal pushes to restrict trans rights, outlaw same-sex marriage (both in the U.S. and internationally), and eliminate reproductive healthcare choices.

In the Senate
=============

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri has an unsurprising tie to the ADF, as his wife, Erin Morrow Hawley, serves as "Senior Counsel, Vice President of Center for Life, [and] Regulatory Practice" in the organization. Not only a current part of the organization but her ties as a clerk for Justice John G. Roberts show yet *another *layer of the widespread roots of the organization.

SCOTUS
======

Justice Amy Coney Barrett has reportedly done as many as five paid speaking events for the ADF, according to a report in 2020 by *Ms Magazine*. While during her confirmation, she denied any awareness of the group's overall strict anti-LGTBQ and anti-choice stances, her ruling in the *Dobbs v. Jackson *case may suggest that she was not altogether opposed to their worldview or opinion of the law.

**The ADF serves as a brutal force in the legal realm for religious zealotry and the radical right's attempts to control our lives, choices, and families. Their opinions and religious ideals should not dictate our lives, from reproductive rights to who we choose to love. **
