Other than a few times in law school, it was my first time giving testimony at a hearing. I’m Conor, Assistant Policy Counsel at The Humane League, and I recently testified in support of SB 193, Maryland’s cage-free bill to protect egg-laying hens.
This exciting piece of legislation would ban the use of cruel cages and require all eggs sold in Maryland to come from cage-free hens. If it passes, millions of hens would be protected from cages so cramped they can barely move.
It was an honor to represent those who can’t represent themselves: the animals.
Our group included the Humane Society of the United States’ Maryland State Director and their Farm Animal Protection Program Director, the owner of Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary in Maryland, a worker at a Maryland cage-free operation, an attorney from Animal Outlook, an esteemed animal behaviorist/scientist, the US Philanthropy Manager from Compassion in World Farming, and many dedicated MD constituents showing support in the room.
I’m sharing my story because I want you to know that The Humane League is truly fighting for animals on all fronts, all over the country. And we can’t do it without you. Monthly donors are the heartbeat of our work—providing consistent funding to fuel effective corporate campaigns and grassroots policy change all across the nation.
One more thing. I may have been nervous at the hearing, but knowing that people like you are supporting this work—all across the country—gave me an unshakeable sense of confidence.
Together, I know we can—and will—build the compassionate future we imagine.
For the animals,
