Dear John,

Please join us in celebrating our “2020 Regional Housing Leaders Awards” recipients. Each month we will spotlight an organization or individual who is working to advance regional housing solutions through creative partnerships.

Today, we honor Alfonso Lopez, a champion for housing affordability in Northern Virginia and a tireless leader and advocate in the General Assembly. Delegate Alfonso Lopez represents the 49th District, covering part of Arlington and Fairfax counties, in the Virginia House of Delegates. As an activist with over 27 years of federal and state legislative experience, Alfonso is engaged in issues critical to the people of Arlington and Fairfax, and is a trusted partner with community-based organizations. Alfonso is a four-term member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and serves as the Whip of the Virginia House Democratic Caucus.

Addressing housing affordability has been one of Alfonso’s top priorities as a delegate. In 2013, he was successful in securing General Assembly approval for his legislation to create the Virginia Affordable Housing Trust Fund (VHTF). This state resource funds projects dedicated to preserving and building affordable housing, as well as addressing homelessness. In the years since its creation, the VHTF has created housing for thousands of Virginians–including hundreds of families in the 49th District.
